Finding a Work / Life Balance in a Small Business

Much has been written about the need for work/life balance, particularly for women. If you own your own business, you should let Stockpile make at least your inventory management duties a bit easier. Consider the following. This summer the debate raged anew thanks to a cover story in The Atlantic magazine entitled "Why Women Still Can't Have It All" written by Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter. It is especially interesting that Dr. Slaughter authored this piece since she would be seen by many as 'having it all.' From 2009 until 2011 Dr. Slaughter was the director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department (the first woman to hold that position) prior to that she was dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Currently she is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton as well as a celebrated author, speaker, and mother of two school-aged sons. Her position in Washington was the culmination of many years of hard work, the pinnacle of her career, yet she chose to leave and return home to Princeton. Why? Because in her own words, "I didn’t just need to go home. Deep down, I wanted to go home. I wanted to be able to spend time with my children in the last few years that they are likely to live at home, crucial years for their development into responsible, productive, happy, and caring adults. But also irreplaceable years for me to enjoy the simple pleasures of parenting—baseball games, piano recitals, waffle breakfasts, family trips, and goofy rituals."

After Dr. Slaughter's article was published the response was overwhelming. Numerous commenters pointed out that men don't 'have it all' either. Obviously, the need for balance exists in all of us and finding it is no easy task. As a small business owner you know this better than most. You have numerous job responsibilities but you have a life outside of work as well. Often one thing leads to another and you find yourself working longer and longer hours just to get the job done. When this happens other things, the real life things, end up falling through the cracks. There just aren't enough hours in the day which leads to frustration. Business solutions from Canvus such as Stockpile can help. It's quick and easy to get started and once your inventory is online things will start to flow more smoothly.
