How to use our online inventory system!

Stockpile was created with the mindset that almost every small business owner does things a bit differently. There are a number of things you should consider when starting out with our online inventory system. A few of these items are more important than others, but ultimately writing things down first (at least your strategy) is a wise idea. Let's consider these questions as you embark upon online inventory management. As Bill Gates said, automation of a solid process leads to efficiency; however, automation of a bad process leads to exponentially more problems.

  • How many locations do you plan to use when tracking your inventory? And what are they?
  • What types of products do you intend to track?
  • Do you have data points to make the best use of our tool? Cost, sale price, in-stock quantity, SKU assignments, etc.
  • How do you categorize your inventory? Size, color, manufacturer, etc.
  • What type of location categorization do you plan to set up? Shelf 1, backroom, cabinet A, etc.
  • How will you transition into using the tool without interrupting business operations?

While our tool is flexible and allows for mistakes, it's important to think through these aspects of inventory management before putting a ton of data into Stockpile. Never fear, you can correct your mistakes. However, it's not always as simple as clicking undo (which is a function within our tool for your last transaction). You may also consider the tool's implementation as the change catalyst needed to reorganize the way you manage inventory. For example, if you randomly put incoming stock onto a shelf to be sorted later you may find standardizing where you store each item makes restocking so much easier. With our tool, this standardization becomes even easier given the ability to specific "Area" for each specific item.
