smart home inventory systemWomen and their shoe collections used to be the punch line of many a joke. These days, even most men have several pairs of shoes. Athletes and celebrities may take shoe collecting to the extreme with entire rooms dedicated just to footwear, but for the rest of us organization is key to keeping track of all those shoes. If you're ready to journey into the land of organization, you need Stockpile. Keep reading for tips on how to organize your collection and how to use Stockpile smart home inventory system to make finding the right pair easy.

Sort By Style

Whether you keep your shoes in their original boxes, in nicely matched containers, or on a rack you need a way to organize them. While it can be tempting to just stack them up with the largest boxes on the bottom that can lead to problems when you want to locate a particular pair. Sorting shoes by style and season is a great way to keep like shoes together. When you're heading out the door you're probably not looking for just anything to put on your feet. Let's face it, if you were the kind of person who would wear just anything, you wouldn't have a shoe collection that needed organizing in the first place. You're most likely looking for something specific. A nice pump, a sneaker, a strappy sandal, you have something in mind to complete your look. Wouldn't it make sense to have all shoes of that type in one area? That way you can view your sneaker collection and decide which pair is right for today. If you have a really vast collection you may also want to sort each style into color groups as well. That way all your blue sneakers would be together and all your tan sandals would be in one place.

Access Is Key

As you're sorting, put the shoes you wear most often in the easiest to access area. Save that corner in the back for the dress shoes that you only wear on special occasions. Remember, you're trying to make your life easier. On those mornings when you're running late you'll appreciate being able to quickly grab the shoes you need. That's also a good reason not to stack your shoes sky high. It may take up less space and look neat, but when you need the box on the bottom you're going to regret that leaning tower of shoes.

Stockpile: Friend to All Feet

Many people store their shoes in a way that makes it hard to see them. If you keep them in the original box there may be a small picture o the shoe on the end of the box but it can be hard to tell much about the style. Those clever clear bins only offer you a glimpse of the end of the shoe, allowing you to see color but not much more than a hint of the style. Even if you line all your shoes up on an easy to view rack there are advantages to using Stockpile. Because Stockpile is fully customizable you can choose which fields to include in item records. You can describe your shoe in detail and even include a photo in the record so that you'll always be able to see exactly what it looks like. Then using areas and locations you can be very specific about where in the closet that shoe can be found. You can also include details such as what size that shoe is, when you got you, and any notes to yourself that would be helpful such as 'causes blisters' or 'wear with no show socks'. When you remember those little nice to knows before you set out for the day, your feet will definitely thank you.

Old Soles

It's sad, but true. No shoe lasts forever. Unfortunately, our favorite ones usually wear out the fastest. If you include purchase details in your item records you may be able to replace your faves when the time comes. At the very least you'll remember which pairs you had to get rid of and you won't waste time searching for shoes you no longer own. Just remember to keep those records up to date. If you trash or donate a pair remove them from your inventory.
