Routine Not Rigidity

Having a routine can be a good thing.  Not only does it help you remember to do certain tasks, it also makes it easier to complete them since, if you've done it often enough, you can almost go on "auto-pilot" and still get it done.  Brushing your teeth is a perfect example. This activity has become so routine that you don't have to think about each individual step in the process, you just step up to the sink and start brushing.

As you establish work routines it's important to allow some flexibility in the process. Being too rigid in your routines can actually hurt your business in the long run. Take for instance your process for writing and reviewing press releases or other published content. In most instances, writing and then proofing before writing more would be a good process. If, however, you get behind on proofing and then postpone writing more because you haven't had a chance to proof the first batch yet you could end up way behind on your work.  You need to be flexible enough to switch up your routine when it will benefit your workflow and your company.

Many people like to have set days for certain tasks. Again, this can be good as far as keeping things from being overlooked. If you do something everything Wednesday morning you can block out time on your calendar so that this activity doesn't get squeezed out by other meetings and tasks that crop up.  If something does come up that necessitates moving your weekly task to another day or time, be flexible. Just because you can't do two tasks at once, that doesn't mean that you can't get them both done.  There will be occasions when your weekly task needs to be moved and that's okay.

Often our routines will need to change to keep up with technological advances.
