Renew! Refresh! Reorganize?

Spring is here and lots of 're' words are popping up. Renew, restore, refresh - those are some happy positive words. Unfortunately reorganize often gets a bad rap. Reorganizing sounds like drudgery. For many people it brings to mind hours spent wading through clutter trying to fit it into some semblance of order.  Ugh! We can understand why most people try to avoid the chore. We would suggest however, that using the right tools and having a sound plan can change your entire perspective.  In fact, you might even enjoy the task.

The first thing you need is a clear purpose.  If your only goal is to move the piles of stuff from one spot to another that is an admirable idea but it isn't really a purpose. You are likely to get bored and/or frustrated with the job at hand and just move on to something more appealing.  If on the other hand, you want to clean out the spare room so that your favorite aunt can visit that is a purpose that will keep you motivated and focused.  Having a defined purpose will help you determine your plan of action.  You know that your aunt will need a clear path to the bed, a space for her suitcase and probably some room in the closet or dresser as well.

Once you have determined the purpose of your undertaking and your plan of action starts to take shape you are ready to get down to the nitty gritty details.  You'll need to clear out an area to sort items into three piles; keep, sell and donate.  The donate pile is the easiest to dispose of. Simply bag or box the items up and take them to your charity of choice. For items that you'd like to sell you'll need a designated spot to store them until you can actually find buyers.  The keep pile holds everything that needs to find a home within your house.  Take a good look at this stack and then ask yourself:  What do you need to accomplish your goal? Do you need bins, baskets or other storage for the stuff that you are reorganizing?

Consider the size of the space as well as the overall look that you are hoping to achieve. Crowding the room with storage won't really improve the space.  Once you have a clear idea of your vision for the room make a list of all necessary purchases and then going shopping.

Putting all the items away in their new storage containers should be the fun part of the job. The clutter will be managed and you will have a clean, well organized space that you can use and enjoy.
