“Getting Things Done” – 2 Minute Rule

Speedy inventory management can help!

In previous articles, we talked about Getting Things Done (GTD) by David Allen. One rule that he come up with is the "2 minute rule". Basically if you are processing your inbox (like email) when you are reviewing an item, ask yourself if it is going to take less than 2 minutes. If it is going to take less than 2 minutes, like accepting a meeting invite or a quick single line email response, go ahead and take care of it. If it is going to take longer than 2 minutes, add it to your next action list or project list. If applied correctly, this can be a good technique for things like your email or text messages (of course, you need somewhere to capture your next action items). A good example of how to get things done in less than 2 minutes can come in the form of using the right tool for the job. If you're in the market for an inventory management solution, look no further. Canvus has built Stockpile to make your inventory tracking a quick and painless process.

This same technique can be used when running your small business. When going through your tasks if they can be done in less than 2 minutes, don't put them off, do them right away. Of course, you run into the risk of thinking a task might only take 2 minutes, but it ends up taking longer. Be conscious of the time you are spending on these 2 minute tasks and move them onto a project/next action list if you find them taking longer.

One goal with Stockplie is to provide quick and easy access to your inventory information. The "quick" part is an important one. Hopefully, Stockplie allows you to check the count of a piece of inventory in less than 2 minutes. Need to quickly add an item to your inventory? That should also take less than 2 minutes to find and enter. Our inventory management tool was built for efficiency.

(the initial signup should take less than 2 minutes, but you might have to add it to your next action list to get your inventory added and organized)
