Beware the Winter Blahs

January comes in cold, wet and often ushers in cold and flu season.  It's no surprise that many people suffer from the winter blahs, or in more severe situations, seasonal affective disorder.  Even if your depression is the more mild variety, it can be difficult to deal with. The winter blahs affect more than just your mood, they can impact your ability to do your job, your perceived job satisfaction and more.  Today, we have some tips to help you beat the blahs and keep your mood elevated between now and spring.

  1. Celebrate. We often assume that once the holidays have passed so have all our reasons to celebrate.  This doesn't have to be the case.  You can celebrate year end successes with a work luncheon or even just a special snack in the break room. Don't let the weather get you down. Celebrate the first snowfall or the coldest day of the new year. Enjoy some uniquely winter treats such as hot cocoa or hot apple cider.  Sometimes even a little pick-me-up is enough to brighten your whole day.
  2. Recognize employees for their hard work. Chances are everyone has had to pitch in a little extra around the holidays. Covering vacations for coworkers or just trying to get stuff done before everyone takes some time off can put extra strain on your employees. Getting back into the swing of things after a break can be tough too. Take a moment to pass out some praise and let your employees know that you recognize and appreciate everything they do.
  3. Lighten up. Winter depression can be linked to reduced Vitamin D due to the fact that we spend less time in the sun this time of year. If it's warm enough to get outside for a bit, go for it. If not, try using a sun lamp or even just turning on more lights to brighten up your workspace.
  4. Find a new project. Often, we mistake boredom for the winter blahs. We feel as though they isn't anything exciting going on. Now is a great time to tackle a new project that you're excited about. Don't have time at work to take on anything new? Try a new hobby on the weekends. You'll be surprised what a difference having something that you're excited about can make in your overall attitude.
  5. Adjust your attitude. This may sound like the simplest suggestion, but it can be the most difficult to do. Make a conscious effort to be happy and to see things in a positive light. It's often easier to get bogged down in negativity, especially when the weather is gloomy and you aren't feeling 100% healthy. Remind yourself that your attitude is important and that you choose to have a positive outlook.
