At Home Hacks: Cleaning Edition

easy home inventoryToday, we're back with another post to help you organize your home. This time we're talking about cleaning products. Cleaning products are supposed to help you keep your home clean and germ-free. Unfortunately, they can take up so much space that they actually clutter up your cabinets and shelves.  And, let's not even talk about what a mess you'll have if a cleaning product leaks or spills. Ugh! That's why it's important to organize your cleaning products to minimize the mess factor.

  1. How many products do you really need? We all fall for the hype from time to time. You see an ad that promises that this new cleaning product will reduce the amount of time and effort required to get the job done. Sounds great, right? Ask yourself this, how many past products have really delivered on that promise? Have you ever tried a new cleaner and wondered how you ever got by without it? Most of the time they are marginally better at best and now you have half a bottle of your old cleaner and a bottle of new cleaner fighting for space. Don't buy new until you've finished off the old and don't believe everything you hear. If your current cleaner is getting the job done, stick with it. If it's not, consider trying the alternative.
  2. Where should you store them? Sometimes it's a common sense decision. You're not going to keep shower cleaner in the kitchen anymore than you'd want to have stovetop polish in the bathroom. Other times it can be a bit of a gray area. Some multi-purpose cleaners can be used in multiple rooms of your home. The question you have to ask yourself is whether or not you want to have a bottle of cleaner in each room or one that travels as needed. If you go with one bottle that moves from room to room we recommend a sturdy plastic caddy for transport. You can even pack paper towels, rags and other cleaning implements so that you'll have exactly what you need right at your fingertips.  Regardless of which route you choose, you'll need a space to store cleaners.  Remember our previous organization tips, store things the way you will look for them. Group together the items you will use together and always put taller items in the back so that they don't hide smaller packages.
  3. When in doubt, throw it out! This advice is commonly applied to leftovers and other food items, but it is a good rule of thumb for cleaning products as well. If something has gotten gunky, it's time to get rid of it. If the words have worn off the packaging and you're not sure what it is or where it's supposed to be used, don't use it. You don't want to ruin a major appliance or other home feature because you used the wrong cleaner on it.  Your home is your largest, most expensive investment, you owe it to yourself to protect it.
