What Drives You?

Apple may be ramping up to create an electric car by 2019. Tesla just announced a seven passenger SUV. The EPA alleges that Volkswagen has been cheating emissions tests. Autonomous vehicles, public car hacks, innovative designs, the news is full of automobile related posts these days. Whether you are a car aficionado or not, there is something that drives you. Something that motivates you to keep pushing forward, growing your small business. Small business owners face a myriad of challenges and sometimes it can feel as though as you’re getting hit from all sides. There are so many things that can sink your business; competition, market conditions, unforeseen disasters. This is why your motivation is so critical. That drive is the reason that you do what you do, day after day, despite the challenges.

There are some prevalent myths about motivation.

  • Putting pen to paper is magic. Simply write down your goals and you will achieve them.
  • Dreaming = Doing. If you can imagine your success, it will happen.

If either of these was true there would be millions of success stories and likely no cautionary tales because virtually everyone on this planet is capable of imagining success for themselves and/or writing down goals that they’d like to achieve. Clearly there is more to the recipe for success.

Writing down your goals is a great first step, you just need to take things a bit farther. In several previous posts we’ve outlined process mapping and how it works. If you missed any of those posts you can read them here.

Ah ha! Process Mapping and our online inventory system.

Process Mapping and Online Inventory Management

Back on Track

Process mapping will get you moving in the right direction but even that isn’t enough. Just identifying your problem areas won’t eliminate the issues. You need to develop a plan to solve these problems and neutralize their negative effects on your business. This brings us to myth number two. Problems would vanish instantly if all we had to do was imagine a solution. Unfortunately, real problems require actual answers and action. Often these solutions come at a real cost as well. Whether you need to make staffing changes, upgrade your technology, increase your marketing efforts or implement some other strategy there may be emotional and/or financial expenditures required. This, as they say, is the cost of doing business.
