In-store Ideas for Customer Retention

In a previous post we discussed customer retention software solutions for your small business. Today we have some suggestions to keep the customers who visit your store coming back. Many of these can be very simple and cost effective to implement. As a matter of fact, our free inventory software even has a role to play when it comes to retention.

Never Underestimate the Influence of a Child. Children can have a huge impact on which businesses their parents frequent. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you don’t need to be kid-friendly because you don’t sell kid products. Providing something to occupy children will allow their parents to focus on the reason they came by. They will appreciate being able to give their purchase their full attention and having the ability to complete their purchase on their first visit.  If children are bored when they come to your business they are likely to begin whining the next time a trip to your store suggested. Conversely, if you have something that they would like to do again, they may actually encourage their parents to return. If you're tracking stock levels of things kids want in our free inventory software, you'll never run out of things that keep these kids coming back.

Offer Refreshments. You don’t have to put out a full buffet. Bottled water, coffee, or soda can be enough to encourage customers to stop in. If you want to include a snack be sure to keep it allergen-free and easy to eat so that you don’t end up with a shop full of crumbs. People are more inclined to shop when they are not hungry or thirsty. Plus, they will really appreciate that little bit of extra effort on your part.

Provide comfortable seating. If anyone in the group seems uncomfortable, everyone may feel the need to hurry through your store.  Having inviting chairs or a couch allows those not browsing to make themselves comfortable which encourages the others to take their time and explore. The longer people spend in your shop, the more likely they are to complete a purchase.

Be Friendly. Greet people with a smile. Engage customers in some friendly conversation. When you and your employees seem to genuinely enjoy your job and care about your customers, it makes the entire experience that much more satisfying and pleasant. With such an overall positive impression of your business they will gladly return again and again.

Keep in mind, in store promotions don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Sometimes the simplest ideas are best. Anything that will show your customers that you value their business can have a positive impact on your customer retention strategies.
