Staying Healthy This Season

Colder weather is coming and it can seem as though catching a cold or the flu is almost inevitable. Fortunately, this is not true. There are things that you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick this winter.  Nothing derails a plan faster than an unexpected illness. Here are a few tips for keeping yourself healthy this winter.

  1. Hydrate. Human beings are over 50% water and hydration is important at all times but especially during cold and flu season.  Dehydration can have a number of symptoms including dry mouth, crankiness, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, and tiredness. Even if you don’t develop a full blown cold, none of these are fun so do what you can to avoid becoming dehydrated.
  2. Don’t forget to eat. Often when we’re particularly busy or just out of our normal routine it can be easy to forget to eat. Not eating can result in many of the same symptoms as dehydration. Even worse, once we get really hungry we tend to make bad choices and choose to eat whatever is readily available despite its lack of nutritional value. Not eating regular healthy meals can have a host of negative effects as well.
  3. Get enough rest.  It’s easy to believe that we are simply too busy to rest. We’ll push ourselves to finish one more project, to attend one more event, to get just one more thing done. Before we know it we’re completely exhausted and in danger of getting sick.
  4. Wash your hands.  Wash your hands and avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes and mouth. A little extra attention to your hygiene can really help you avoid picking up a bug.
  5. Combat stress. Avoiding stress this time of year can be a real challenge. The good news is that there are ways you can combat any stress that you may face.  Take time to relax. You can even meditate if that’s your thing. Simply taking a few moments to sit quietly with your eyes closed can be a great stress reducer.  If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask for it.  Sometimes the most stressful part of any situation is believing that we are alone in it.
  6. Don’t be afraid to say no.  Trust your instincts. If you feel like you are being asked to do too much, just say no. It’s okay to decline invitations or to say that you can’t volunteer for something if you are stretched too thin. Often we feel like we have to say yes to avoid hurting anyone else’s feelings. Doing so to our own detriment isn’t good for anyone.
  7. Do things that make you happy.  Take some time to do things that make you happy. It can be something small like getting a coffee on the way to work. Treating yourself with your favorite beverage at lunchtime. Having a mid-afternoon snack. If you have time and can afford it, indulge in a manicure, pedicure or massage.
  8. Communicate. We touched on this one above, but it bears discussing in more detail. Communicating can be beneficial in so many ways. Not keeping things bottled up can be a stress reducer. Saying no can alleviate tasks that may have become overwhelming. Asking for help can provide the resources that you need to stay stress-free and still get things done.  Plus, good communication can reduce the risk of depression.
