It's been several years since we first talked about restaurant point of sale systems. To read either of our previous blogs on the subject click here or here. Although the systems have been in use for more than two years now we're still noticing a decided lack of progress in their use. Many patrons are hesitant to use them either because they are uncomfortable with the technology or because they have experienced issues with the system in the past. Today we're back with some more tips to help you encourage your customers to use the on table point of sale system.
- Make sure your system is proper working order. It only takes a few failed attempts for someone to revert back to the foolproof old way of having the server deliver the check. If your printer paper is improperly installed the customer's receipt won't print and they will need server assistance to complete checkout. Make sure that anyone willing to use your point of sale system can do so without running into preventable problems.
- Educate your customers. If waitstaff ignores the elephant sitting on the edge of the table, your customers will too. When staff greets the table they should ask whether or not they are familiar with the system and provide a brief introduction if they are not. Remember to point out the benefits for the customer. Anyone who eats out has experienced the inconvenience of waiting for the server to come by so that you can request a refill, ask for a box or order dessert. If that is something they can do anytime by clicking a few buttons on the table side machine why wouldn't they? Just offering a way to pay the check isn't enough to encourage techno-phobes to take the leap and try something new. There's got to be significant benefit for them.
- Avoid surprises. Some systems offer free games while others charge. If your system charges make sure your customers are aware. No one wants to rack up a big bill playing games while waiting for their meal. There is also potential for kids to accidentally start a game with a fee so it is especially important that families know if there are fees that will be added to their check.
- Give customers the option to avoid the screen altogether. Of course you want your restaurant to be a comfortable welcoming space that customers want to visit again and again. Be mindful of the fact that some people don't want to enjoy screen time with their meal. Give them the option to turn the screen away from the table or remove it entirely if they prefer. Having TVs is one thing, a flashing screen on your table takes the intrusion to a whole new level.
- Reward your customers for trying the new system. If your patrons are particularly reticent you can offer extra incentives such as additional loyalty points or other perks for using the table system.
Remember, the biggest benefit for using the point of sale system in your restaurant is to make life easier for your staff and your customers. If it's been two years and you're still not realizing the benefits you've hoped for you may need to change your approach. Implementing the new system was an expense and you need to see a positive ROI. Don't give up!
