January has come and gone and you may have already blown some of your new year’s resolutions but we have a suggestion that is totally doable and sure to improve your success rate. February is the month of hearts and flowers so show yourself a little love.
Simply resolve to do better. Whatever you have to do make a commitment to do it to the best of your ability at that moment. Some days will be better than others. One day’s effort may totally outclass what you’re able to accomplish on another day but if you have done the best you could, that’s all you can do. Making specific resolutions is great because it gives you a clear goal, but it can often be difficult to stick with those lofty aspirations. If you say that you are going to quit drinking soda but then slip up and have a Cherry Coke with lunch, you’ve failed. If you say that you are going to make better choices when it comes to your beverages you’ve given yourself some latitude. Perhaps you choose to have Sprite instead of Cherry Coke. Sprite is a better choice because it’s caffeine free. Yes, it is still a soda, but it is a better choice so you’ve still succeeded.
We’re not suggesting that you use this as a crutch. You should still aspire to kick those bad habits, to improve your physical and mental well-being or to achieve the goals that you would like to reach. Don’t use our friendlier resolutions as an excuse to cheat or a reason to slack off, simply look at it as a way to continue to succeed even when you don’t score 100%.
Life has its ups and downs. Some days are better than others. The only thing we can control is how we handle these challenges. That’s why it is important to set ourselves up for success whenever possible. Often if we feel like we’ve failed, we give up. By allowing ourselves some latitude within our goals, we are really committing to keep trying. We are saying that even if everyday isn’t perfect, we are going to keep going and keep striving to succeed.
