Procrastination: The Root of All Headaches

This time of year, there is always lots to do and there never seems to be enough time to get everything done.  Stress is very common as we try to cram everything in. There is one easy, but often overlooked, way to combat stress. Time management. More specifically, the ‘dive right in and get it done’ approach.

Often we waste time bemoaning all that we have to do. We sit around thinking about everything, without actually taking any steps to get things done. This only adds to our stress level because every minute that we waste is one less minute that we have to get things done.  The longer we put it off, the more daunting the task becomes.

In a previous blog post we talked about ways to get that good job well done feeling. Today we’re going to focus on the number one way to get there faster, quit procrastinating and just get it done! Sometimes we don’t even realize that we are procrastinating.  We fool ourselves into thinking that we are reviewing our To Do list, weighing our options, and saving ourselves time in the long run by making smarter decisions.  Occasionally this is true, but more often we are simply putting off a task that we are loath to do.

If you want to reduce your stress level this season, start checking things off of your To Do list. Seeing that line of checks that means you have successfully completed a task is a great feeling.  Watching your To Do list shrink feels even better.  Sometimes choosing a few quick and easy projects just to get them out of the way is the best way to start the day. Accomplishing a few things early on in the day can provide a confidence boost.  Suddenly your long list seems more manageable. Once you’re feeling a bit more optimistic you’ll be better equipped to tackle the more complicated or time consuming tasks on your list.

Jumping in and getting started can have other benefits as well.  People are far less likely to volunteer to help someone who is sitting around complaining without making any effort on their own. It stands to reason that if you have time to sit around and jaw about your To Do list, you must have more than enough to get everything else done.  On the other hand, someone who is working hard and making headway but still seems to have an insurmountable number of things left to do inspires others to lend a hand if they are able. People are much more willing to help those that are helping themselves.
