Need More Space? You Might Not Need to Move!

No one likes to feel cramped.  We all like to have room to spread out and feel comfortable. Hermit crabs discard their shells and select new, larger ones as they grow. Snakes shed their skin when it becomes a bit snug so that they can continue to grow. When humans start to feel a bit crowded in our current digs, we start looking for a bigger place as well. Unlike our animal friends, we do have other options. If your current home is feeling a bit small, keep reading for some tips to help you decide whether or not you need to start perusing the realty pages.

  1. Determine the nature of your space issue. Do you have more people living in your home than you have bedrooms or bathroom space for? Or do you just have a lot of stuff taking up all the room? If you need more bedrooms or additional bathrooms you may need to consider moving. If you just have a lot of extraneous stuff, decluttering may be all you need.
  2. How much extra space do you need? Before you take on the expense (and hassle) of selling your current home and buying a new one, explore all options for adding on to your existing home. A remodel can be a time consuming, expensive process but it could be less costly and aggravating than a move would be.
  3. Think outside the box. Are there alternative ways to meet your needs without adding on or moving? For example, do you have a dining room that only gets used once or twice a year? What about a formal living room? Tradition might dictate that it is proper to have them sitting there waiting for the odd occasion when you actually use them, but if it suits your family needs to convert them into a space that is usable on a daily basis, go for it!
  4. Dual purpose. Do you have one space that needs to serve more than one purpose? There are tons of options that allow you to add convertible pieces to your room so that meet a variety of needs.  There are end tables that fold out into full desks, sofas that convert to full beds, and wall cabinets that pull out to reveal storage, ironing boards, beds and more.  Carefully research all the options before you give up on your current home.

Moving is a complicated, drawn out, expensive process. Not only will you have the expense of your new home purchase which more than likely comes with a higher mortgage if you're upsizing, but you'll have to pour some funds into your current place to help it sell. Then you've got realtor fees, inspection fees, lending fees, not to mention all the costs associated with transferring all your services to a new address.  Speaking of transferring, if you move you'll need to let everyone know that you've moved. It's not just your friends that need to be notified, you'll need to let all your credit cards, your insurance, your bank, etc know that you have a new address.  One bill that is delayed because it had to wait for the post office to forward it to your new home can really cost you.
