The Multitasking Myth?

We all like to think that we are multitaskers - well at least many of us do. It makes us feel good to say that we were able to handle several things at once. Just like Stockpile, free inventory management software from Canvus, we think we can handle multiple people (users) and things (inventory transactions) at a time.  Experts tell us that multitasking is a myth, however. There are countless studies that show that if you are trying to complete two or more tasks at the same time you are not actually performing your best at either one. With your focus split you may be able to achieve passable results but you could have done each task better if you did them consecutively. What if you could accomplish more than one task at a time, and still focus completely? Technology makes this possible.

As I write this blog post I am vacuuming my living room. No, I’m not typing one handed as I balance a laptop on the vacuum handle.I’m sitting at a desk typing while my Roomba systematically transverses my living room. Roomba’s focus is single-minded. It will continue making passes across the floor until it sense that the area is clean or until it needs to recharge. I am able to focus completely on my writing, save for the background hum. Two tasks, but only one that requires my attention. Attention is key. That's why one user can do but one thing in Stockpile, free inventory management software, at a time. Even though users can operate concurrently each user can only accurately focus on one button click at a time. Many users all a once is not a problem  But one user making many decisions at once is most likely going to cause a re-do!

You can achieve the same full focus multitasking capabilities for your small business by choosing the right software and other solutions. If you’ve been following our series on technology for your small business you know that we covered a number of different solutions that can help with a myriad of business tasks.
