Looks Matter
The way someone looks is an important clue to their future commitment to the job. Unless you're a fashion designer you don't need to hire a supermodel to work for you. What you do need is someone whose appearance shows that they cared enough to get dressed up for the interview. A candidate who shows up in casual attire or whose suit is wrinkled is telling you that this interview was an after thought. It clearly wasn't a priority in their day or something they spent time and effort getting ready for. If they can't even make an effort when they're trying to get the job, why would you expect them to make an effort once they have it? Look for candidates who clearly prepared for the interview and are focused on making a good impression. They are the ones who really want to work for you. Also, watch the candidate's facial expressions during the interview. If they look bored that is a big red flag. If they are zoning out during the interview they are likely to slack during the work day as well. Even worse, if they roll their eyes, scowl, or frown while you're talking to them that shows a lack of respect for you, your company, and the open position. That does not bode well for their future achievement. Candidates should be sincere and interested in learning more about your company and the position that they're interviewing for. They should be happy to be interviewing with you and focused on the discussion.
What Do They Bring to the Table?
They won't show up with a gift basket, but every candidate brings something to the table. Whether its personality, skill set, attitude, knowledge, or something else every candidate arrives with a special combination that makes them unique. You likely chose them for an interview because they met the criteria for the open position. Don't spend the entire interview reviewing their resume. Really delve into what makes them unique and try to determine what else they bring to the table. Are they good at motivating others? Do they have a sunny disposition? Are they born organizers? Some soft skills can make a huge difference in your workforce. You need people who do more than just get the job done, you need employees who encourage everyone around them to be better. Find this person and you'll be singing a happy tune.
