Like It, Love It or Lose It

fast simple inventory systemSpring showers bring numerous opportunities to take a day and clean out your closet. If it's been awhile since you cleared it out it's likely that you have a number of pieces that you no longer wear taking up space. Did you know that those extra clothes are actually hurting you? It's true. Your clothes need to breathe. When they're packed in too tightly the air doesn't circulate around them properly and this causes them to wear out faster. That means that keeping that old skirt from 10 years ago may be damaging that new dress that you love. It hardly seems worth keeping now, does it?

If you're ready to tackle your closet, keep reading for some great tips to help you out.

  1. Be prepared. Cleaning out your closet isn't going to be a quick job. You should pull everything out of the closet and try it on. If you just thumb through the hangers you'll be much more likely to let things stay. If you pull them out and then have to put them back you'll be tougher about what makes the cut.  Trying things on helps you eliminate the pieces that no longer fit, or fit as well as they should. Just because you can still get into it doesn't mean you will choose to wear it anytime soon.
  2. Three categories. Everything in your closet should fall into one of three categories, like it, love it or lose it. If you love it these items should be hung together where they are easy to see and access. These are your favorite pieces, your go-to's when you're getting dressed. Your like it section is for those pieces that might not be quite as special but are still really good and worn often. If you find that you have some stuff that doesn't fall into the like it or love it category then it should go in the lose it pile. Things that end up in the lose it pile need to be donated or thrown away. Remember holding on to things you don't wear isn't a victimless crime. All those unworn items are reducing the lifespan of your liked and loved items.
  3. 'Weight' a minute. Many people hang on to clothes that no longer fit because they anticipate their weight going either up or down. If you are yo-yo dieter your weight may fluctuate frequently, otherwise you are unlikely to drop or gain a significant amount of weight in a hurry. If it takes you months or even years to lose the pounds you deserve to reward yourself with some new clothes, not things that have gone out of style. If your weight goes up some new flattering clothes can really improve your attitude so it might be worth the splurge as well. Too small or too large clothes hanging around the closet most often just make us feel bad. Either it's shame over how large we used to be, or frustration because we have outgrown somethings that we loved.
