Give Yourself a Day Off

quick free inventory solutionMost small business owners, and even their employees, find it hard to take days off. It's just the nature of being small. When there are only a few people doing all the work it's hard for anyone to step away without creating more work for someone else.  Often that leads to people overworking and increases the risk of burnout.  Today, we're going to talk about ways to give yourself a day off without actually taking an entire vacation day.

  1. Switch up your routine. Having a morning routine helps us get out the door quicker with fewer hassles. Because of this we tend to eat the same things for breakfast each morning and pack the same lunch or snack for the afternoon. It's quick, easy and doesn't require much thought to pull together. It can start to feel like a rut though. Give yourself a break from the monotony. Grab a doughnut on the way to work. Have a gourmet coffee. Bake muffins to take to the office. Whatever will make you want to jump out of the bed in the morning can be a great pick-me-up.  If you really like your go-to breakfast, change up your lunch. Instead of packing leftovers or a salad go out to lunch. If time and funds don't permit eating out pack yourself something special.
  2. Dress down. This one only works if you typically dress in business attire for work. If you already show up in shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops you really can't get any more casual unless you show up in pajamas and we wouldn't recommend that. If you're a suit and tie guy or a buttoned up, high heel gal a day to wear casual clothes can feel like a real vacation.  You can still maintain a professional appearance while giving yourself a break.  This one is usually easy to implement and can become a more frequent occurrence.
  3. Take a pass. Remember the days of free passes? If you scored well on a test or earned a reward for exceptional behavior sometimes the teacher would give you a homework pass thereby exempting you from completing the assignment. Give yourself a free pass on a task. In most cases, letting a daily task slide for a day won't be detrimental and it can feel like a real break if it's something that you dread doing or if it frees up a little much needed time in your day. Choose one task that you are going to give yourself permission to skip for a day. Making it a habit wouldn't be a good idea but the mere fact that it happens so rarely makes it that much more special and appreciated.
