Disaster Recovery

In our previous post we provided information on disaster preparedness.   Today, we’re back with some information to help you recover from a disaster that has impacted your community. After a disaster strikes there are a number of steps you’ll need to take to get things back in order. Depending on the nature of the disaster, you may be without water and power for a period of time. There may be extensive damage to your home, vehicle and/or other possessions. This can necessitate a lot of cleanup to get things back to normal.

The first step will be assessing the damage. Once you have a clear idea of the severity of the situation you can begin coming up with a plan to return things to rights. If your home was impacted, you’ll need to identify any items that have been damaged, destroyed or lost.  Remembering everything you own can be a daunting task under the best of circumstances, add in the stress of dealing with an unpleasant and unexpected situation and it can be almost impossible. If you use an easy inventory system like Stockpile you’ll have a complete record of your possessions and details on where each item was before the event. This will make searching for pieces that much easier. Keep in mind that if high winds or flooding were a factor, items may have been significantly displaced. Once you’ve identified your losses you’ll also be able to provide records for your insurance company, which will simplify the claims process. It can also eliminate the fear that you are forgetting important items when submitting your claim.
