Coaching Your Way to Success

Anyone who has ever heard a coach’s locker room speech, knows that coaches are great motivators.  Each one of the founding partners in Canvus is a great coach.  It's what has made our inventory management system for small business a huge success. The good coaches excel at taking a group of talented individuals and turning them into a cohesive team that achieves success on the field or court. Again, as we built out our inventory management system for small business, we naturally figured out where each of us was meant to lead.  In your business, goals are very similar. You recruit the best talent you can find in an effort to create a winning team. With everyone working together you hope to grow your business and find new ways to succeed. Today we’re going to take some tips from some truly great coaches on ways to create a team atmosphere and motivate everyone.

There are so many great quotes out there regarding teamwork but few people understand the importance more than a coach. Their jobs literally depend on their ability to create winning teams. They can never be content to rest on past successes, each year starts a new season with renewed expectations.

"The secret of winning football games is working more as a team, less as individuals. I play not my 11 best, but my best 11."- Knute Rockne - College Football Hall of Fame Coach

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. Success starts during the hiring process. You need to not only hire talented individuals, you need to select people that will work well together. The best teams are made up of members that bring out the best in each other. Each person has his or her individual strengths, and more importantly they know how they complement each others’ efforts.  Coach Rockne makes a great point. He could put 11 very talented individuals on the field but if they don’t play together they won’t win. He has a better shot at winning with 11 less talented players that play together as a team. Keep that in mind when staffing your small business. You’re trying to build the best team, not gather together the most impressive group of individuals.

Once you have your “dream team” of employees, now what?

“Effective teamwork begins and ends with communication. Communication does not always occur naturally, even among a tight-knit group of individuals. Communication must be taught and practiced in order to bring everyone together as one.” Mike Krzyzewski - Basketball Coach, Duke Blue Devils

Each member of your team needs to know what their role in your organization is and how their tasks impact others. Creating a cooperative environment allows employees to grow as individuals, while bonding as a team. To get the ball rolling, there are a number of team building activities that you can implement. The important thing is to give people the opportunity to create connections and get to know each other. Opening the lines of communication will be crucial to your continued success. We've went to far as to say every voice that helps build, use or lead our inventory management system for small business is important. So much so we've created a community of decision-makers that help guide teh evolution of our inventory management system for small business.

"The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual." - Vince Lombardi, Legendary football coach

As any coach will tell you, the team wins or loses based on their collective effort. Even the best player can’t win without the support of the rest of the team. Make sure that everyone understands this. There are team players and then there are those people who think what they do is the most important thing. Your small business can’t afford to be the showcase for a solo act. You need employees who are willing, and able, to work together so that your business can continue to grow. Encourage collaboration and you’ll reap the benefits of the combined efforts of your employees. You may be surprised by the flood of new ideas and solutions that your team can create when they work together.
