Buyer Beware: Things to Keep in Mind Before Hitting the Yard Sales

The fall is a busy time, especially for yard sales. The moderate temps encourage numerous people to pop up some tables and start selling their unwanted items. If you’re thinking about hitting some sales we have some tips for you. As always, be sure to consult Stockpile simple online inventory system before you go.

  • If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. If a seller is offering a great item at an unbelievably low price you need to ask yourself why. Is the item authentic? Does it still work? Are all the necessary pieces included? A purchase is only a good deal if it actually does everything you hoped it would.
  • Be wary of any seller that requires too much personal information when completing a transaction. Cash is the safest way to buy. Some sellers will accept checks but they may ask for personal data such as a driver’s license number or social security number. It’s safer to avoid sharing these details.
  • People love to chat at yard sales. Often the seller has been sitting in their yard for hours and they are grateful for some conversation. You can oblige, but don’t overshare. The seller doesn’t need to know where you live, who shares your home or when you are planning to be away on vacation.
  • Make sure that someone knows where you plan to be. Some yard sales may be off the beaten path. Charge your cell phone before you head out and turn on GPS locator services so that you can be tracked.
  • Don’t go inside a stranger’s house alone. They may have furniture or other large items for sale indoors but it’s risky to go into a strange home by yourself.
  • Keep your cash close. Folded bills can easily fall out of your pocket while you’re hunting for deals. When you make a purchase count carefully and make sure that you return all unspent cash to your holder. You don’t want to lose your spending money at your first stop.
  • Remember to drive carefully. Often the streets leading up to a sale are full of cars and pedestrians. Stay focused on your driving and save your bargain hunting until you’re parked.
