Back to School

Across the country kids have gone back to school and many parents are still feeling the sting of the high price of school supplies. It’s easy to spend $100 or more per child just on the basic necessities when it comes to school supplies. Now that school is underway it’s a great time to stock up on clearance priced school supplies for next year. As we mentioned in a previous post however, stocking up only saves you money if you keep track of what you have and are able to locate it when you need it. Here are a few tips to help you stock up and save on school supplies this fall.

  1. Get a copy of the required supplies for the grade above each of your students. Yes, the list may change some from one year to the next, but this year’s list is a great jumping off point for next year.
  2. Stock up on the essentials. Your students will always need pencils, pens, paper, glue and the like. Even if you overbuy any of these items you can always use them around the house.
  3. Avoid trendy items that may not be considered cool in the future. Some characters are perennial favorites, others are hot one season and not the next. Carefully consider your purchases. If your child didn’t use it, would you be okay walking into a meeting carrying it? If the answer is no, you might be better off choosing a basic instead.
  4. Organize your purchases when you get them home. Having a central location to store supplies will make it easy for everyone in the family to find what they need when they need it.
  5. Use Stockpile!

Stockpile simple free inventory solution is a great way to organize and track your school supplies. Entering items in Stockpile also eliminates the need for a central storage location as well. If it makes more sense to keep writing implements in one area and paper, folders, etc in another you’ll still be able to find everything just by checking Stockpile. Stockpile also allows you to be descriptive and include photos of items in their entry. This can help immensely. It’s great to know that you have four pairs of scissors on hand, but it’s even more important to know that only one pair is the blunt tip style required in the primary grades. Knowing exactly what you have really is the best way to save money. See a great deal at the store? Check Stockpile simple free inventory solution and make sure that you really need that item before you buy. Saving $1 on an item you didn’t really need isn’t saving, it’s wasteful spending.
