Bad Days Shouldn’t Equal Bad Customer Experiences

Everyone has a bad day now and then.  You oversleep, your burn your breakfast, your car won't start, you get some bad news, you have a headache.  A bad mood can be brought on by any number of things. The important thing is to not let your bad mood affect your customer interactions. If you take your bad mood out on your customers, your business could end up suffering and that is sure to lead to more bad days in the future. Keep reading for some tips on ways to minimize the negative effect your bad mood will have on your customers.

Stress less. Take a deep breath and try to relax. If you can compartmentalize and tuck away whatever is bothering you until later you're mood will likely improve. We understand that's not always possible so try to find ways to brighten your mood while you're at work. Listen to a favorite tune, e-mail a friend, treat yourself to a snack or a refreshing drink. Focus on your customers. Sometimes the best way to get over a bad mood is to forget about it, at least for the moment.  Focusing on your customer and your interaction with them will take your mind off of what is bothering you, if only for a few minutes.  Really listening and committing to helping meet your customer's needs will definitely make them feel good and may also provide a positive benefit for you as well.

Be open and honest. This can be tough, especially with strangers, but if you make a particularly bad faux pas (you yawn in their face, snap at them when they ask you a question, or breakdown crying) it can really help to share that you are having a bad day and offer your apologies. You don't have to go into detail or tell them your life story, but most people will understand if you explain and offer sincere regret for your negativity. Like we said in the beginning of this post, everyone has bad days.

Don't think they won't notice. Many people make the mistake of believing that no one will notice if they are having a bad day. Unless you are actively working to hide it, people will notice. Even if you aren't stomping around or wiping tears from your eyes people will notice your lack of cheer and enthusiasm. Think back to the last time you were out shopping. Did you enter any stores where you were greeted warmly? Were there any where you felt like you were ignored? You probably have a favorable opinion of the stores where the employees were friendly and engaging. Your feelings are probably a lot less positive regarding the stores where the employees were sullen, or worse downright rude.  People pick up on the mood of the people around them and can be positively or negatively affected by the vibe they get.  Be sure that you are creating the best possible customer interaction each and every time you deal with the public.
