The 5 Day Rule

You've heard of the 5 second rule. If food falls on the floor you can still eat it as long as you pick up before 5 seconds passes. Conversely, that means that if you let it lay there for more than 5 seconds you have to throw it away.  All new purchases should be subject to the 5 day rule. If you buy an item and then leave it in the bag, box, etc for more than 5 days you clearly don't need it. In fact, you aren't even really excited about it therefore, you shouldn't keep it.

Now before you start sputtering and framing a counterargument, we will allow that there are exceptions. If you buy something at an end of season sale, you may not need to use it until sometime next year when it is back in season. If all like items are already packed away in storage somewhere it could take you a week or more to get around to pulling out the appropriate container and adding the new purchase. If your new purchase isn't for you, it may take more than 5 days to get it to the intended recipient.  Again, this is a valid exception.

These are not the items the 5 day rule is designed to target.  The 5 day rule takes aim at those impulse buys that come home and languish.  The purse, shoes, sweater, belt, etc that seemed like such a good deal when you were at the store but once home just seems to be taking up space.  We've all done it.  A good sale can be hard to pass up. As we said in a previous post, a sale is only a good deal if you truly need and will use the item that you purchased.  Otherwise, it's just a waste of money. One that can end up costing even more in the long run when you have to organize and store the excess. Ugh! Not sounding so good is it?

This is the beauty of the 5 day rule. Once you've made the purchase and brought it home the clock is ticking. If you haven't at least found a permanent home for your new find, it goes back. It hasn't even been a week yet. You have plenty of time to get a refund and put that bad decision behind you. All too often we let items linger and then by the time we decide that we're not really going to use it, it's too late to get a refund. Talk about buyer's remorse.
