Recently we did a series of posts on yard sales. Click here to review if you missed it. Today we’re back with some tips specifically for fall yard sales. Keep reading to learn more about how you can make your sale stand out from the crowd.
Fall is a great time for a yard sale. The weather is mild, the foliage is beautiful and people are looking for reasons to get out and enjoy it. This can mean you’ll face a lot of competition on any given weekend. Add in other activities such as sports, festivals and farm events and you’ll need something to give your sale added appeal.
Get the Word Out. If possible, advertise your sale near schools and sporting venues. These locations are hopping in the fall so your message will reach the maximum audience. Attending any of these events, don’t be shy. Mention your upcoming sale to the other parents and let them know about any items that you’ll be selling that might be of particular interest to them. “I know that Johnny has a younger sister, I’ll be selling some of my daughter’s tutus and ballet gear. You should come by.”
Fall Food. Fall is known for a host of flavors, apple and pumpkin being perennial favorites. Offering a snack stand, particularly if you donate the proceeds to charity, can be a real draw. Keep it simple. Apple and pumpkin muffins, candied or caramel apples, doughnut holes, apple cider, hot chocolate. Any of those warm comfort finger foods are sure to be a hit.
Winning Plays. There are a lot of different sports in season during the fall. If you have any gently used sports equipment to sell play that up in your advertising. Don’t forget about those team jerseys either. A great deal on their favorite player’s gear might bring your customers in a hurry.
Great Gifts. Chances are your customers might be looking for holiday gifts. Create a table that really showcases any items you’re offering that would make great gifts. Sometimes just getting someone thinking about their gift giving needs can help you make some sales. Remind them that they should be thinking about their aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and more while they’re browsing.
Seasonal Decorations. This is the perfect time to sell holiday decorations. Halloween and Thanksgiving have just passed and many people may be looking for items that they wish they had. Christmas and New Year’s are right around the corner. Create fun, festive displays that show people how great these decorations would look in their own homes. Priced right these items will sell quickly.
