Better Customer Service Begins With Employees

Your customers can tell whether your employees like their jobs or not. Whether it’s a bored eye roll, a snappy answer or just a general disinterested attitude your employees often let your customers know just how they feel about being at work. That's why our support team is constantly challenging ourselves to be better when you need help with our inventory management system.  Now everyone has bad days and your customers will likely understand that, but if it’s a consistent problem each time they visit your store and/or something that occurs with various staff members your customers are going to start to dread visiting your business. At that point, it won’t matter how much marketing you do or how many giveaways and promotions you run, your customer service rating is going to be in the tank.

If you missed our recent posts on how to improve employee retention you can find them here and here. Today we’re going to discuss some additional ways that you can improve employee morale and help your employees love their jobs.

New Hire Know How The happiest employees are the ones who genuinely love their jobs. The people that would do what they do for free because they love it so much. If you can hire people like that to work for you, you won’t have to work as hard to keep them happy at work. The key here is not to rush the interview process. Take the time to really ask questions and listen carefully to the answers the prospective employee gives. Of course, interviewees are trying to make a good impression and convince you to hire them, but if you pay close attention you’ll be able to tell the difference between someone who is sincere and someone who is just telling you what they think you want to hear. We work hard to train candidates before including them in the support rotation for our inventory management system. No one wants to hear, "I don't know how to do that".

Don’t Take Advantage of Your Employees Mutual respect is critical in the boss-employee relationship. You can’t expect respect from your employees if you don’t give it to them in return. Be upfront about expectations and follow through with what you say. Of course there will be times when the unexpected occurs and you have to ask employees to work extended hours or perform additional tasks. That’s okay as long as you explain the reasons to your staff and let them know that you appreciate their flexibility and support. If these overages become a recurring theme you’ll need to make some adjustments though. Employee understanding will quickly wear thin if the same situations arise time and time again. We pride ourselves knowing that the folks supporting our inventory management system and your businesses have either been with us since day one or have absolutely no intentions of going elsewhere. Employee retention that breeds great customer service  is our #1 goal.

Make Your Business a Place That People Want to Work There a number of ways to do this that are low to no cost. Talk to your employees and find out what’s important to them. Whether it’s an employee discount, a weekly treat, or just fun staff only promotions try to find ways to celebrate the people that work for you. We'd like to think that our team is what makes our workplace. And it's not just the thrilling thought of supporting an inventory management system that keeps our folks so happy!

Share Your Enthusiasm You started your business because something about the niche appealed to you. Share your love for your business with your employees. Talk to them about why you do what you do. Don’t underestimate the amount of influence you can have on an employee’s attitude. If they know why something is important to you, it may just become important to them as well.

Happy employees smile more, are more willing to go the extra mile for customers, and have a more positive attitude during even the most trying circumstances. If you can win the employee satisfaction battle you will be better positioned to win the customer service war.
