King or Queen of Everything

Some people feel like they need to be the king or queen of everything. They feel as though success means knowing how to do everything on their own. As a small business owner, you've probably felt that way yourself. Especially when you were first starting out, you probably needed to do as much as possible on your own to cut costs and get your business off the ground. Once you start to turn a profit though, it's good to recognize your strengths and to identify those tasks that would be better performed by someone else. Whether you decide to outsource or take on staff, it's a good idea to hire people who specialize in the task you need performed. A king or queen of everything is likely to not be that good at any one task and they mean even try to take over functions that you already have covered. To be truly good something there are three key factors that need to be present, passion, talent and drive. You don't have to have all three and you can definitely have more of one than the other two, but some combination is best.

Passion

When you are passionate about something you are more likely to be good at it. It could be that you are passionate because you have talent in that area, but it could also be that you spend more time and effort on the things that you enjoy and, therefore, become better at them. Whatever the case may be, the odds are you will be good at the things that you are truly passionate about. Plus, doing tasks that you enjoy usually makes people feel good and improves their overall mood and satisfaction. Just another benefit to following your passion.

Talent

Most people at better at identifying talent in others than they are at seeing it in themselves. With a little thoughtful retrospection you can learn to identify your talents easily. Some things just come easier to some people. Some concepts are difficult to grasp while others just seem to "make sense" when you hear them for the first time. Those are both indicators of some level of talent. Being talented at something doesn't equate to being perfect. It doesn't mean that it doesn't require some degree of effort. It simply means that you can pick things up faster and progress more quickly with a little effort. If you devote extra time to honing your skills in an area that you possess an innate talent, you will see gratifying results in no time.

Drive

Sometimes drive is a passable substitute for talent. If you truly want to do something, even if it doesn't come easily for you, you can probably learn how to do it. Now you can't turn yourself into a 7' NBA star just by wishing it to be so, but you can improve your dribbling and your shooting and become a better basketball player if you have enough drive and ambition. Talent and passion won't get you anywhere without motivation.

Can you, or your employees, learn to complete tasks for which passion, talent and drive are all lacking? Of course. Assigning people tasks that they like and are good at will, however, be far more beneficial.

So, how do you discover which tasks fit which employees best? You can always start by asking. Most employees aren't shy about speaking up regarding the tasks that they truly dislike. They may not be as quick to shout out the ones that they enjoy the most. Take a moment to ask them which jobs they prefer doing. If you can pair them with their favorite tasks that can even make up for the tasks they dread but still have to perform. At the every least, they'll appreciate the fact that you were interested and took the time to make the inquiry.

Observation is another good way to identify which employees are best at which tasks. It's usually pretty easy to see who put the most time and effort into something as opposed to those who finished a job as fast as possible just so they could check it off their list. While this could just be a indicator of a lack of work ethic, if you know you have good employees, this is probably just a sign of a bad fit assignment.
