Home Is Where….

Home is supposed to be where the heart is, but all too often it is where the heaps of unused stuff are. How can your home be your safe haven when you feel like the clutter is closing in on you and you can seldom find what you need when you need it?  Now, we're not suggesting that you're a hoarder. But if we're honest we have to admit that we hang out to stuff that we should get rid of and we're sure that is true for most people.

We've written a number of posts on decluttering but today we're adjusting our focus a bit to hone in on creating the kind of welcoming, relaxing space that you can't wait to come home to. If you need to review our decluttering posts we've provided the links below.

Need More Space? You Might Not Need to Move

Everything Old Won't Be New Again

Once you've cleared out the stuff that you no longer want or need, it's time to start creating the atmosphere that you'd like to have in your home.  If you were able to sell some of the items that you were getting rid of you may have some extra cash to spend on your redecoration. If not, that's okay. We're going to offer tips that you can implement at little to no cost.

  1. Decide on your style. After decluttering you've probably had a good look at who you've been. There's nothing like sorting through the remnants of past hobbies and mementos from old relationships to put things in perspective. You may have been reminded of some past interests or some things that you never want to see again. Either way, you should have a good idea of what does, and does not, interest at this point in your life.
  2. Consider comfort. What can you do to make this space more functional, more comfortable. Don't store frequently used items in hard to reach places. Don't invest in a fancy chair that makes your back ache if you sit in it. Only the pieces that bring you joy and meet your needs get to stay.
  3. Add personal touches. Now that the amount of stuff in your room has been pared down you can add a few special, personal touches that are guarantee to brighten your day. When you restrict yourself to just a few knick knacks, you want to make them really count. Choose things that have meaning for you and will make you smile each time you see them.
