Ease Back In

easy inventory solutionVacations are necessary to allow employees to rest and recharge. They are great for morale but can wreak havoc on productivity. Often employees go into vacation mode days or even weeks before their trip. They are distracted and not able to accomplish as much as normal in a given day. While they are out work likely piled up as other employees await their return. It's important to encourage employees returning from vacation to ease back into their duties though. Nothing erases the feeling of vacation bliss faster than diving back into work and trying to plow through a week's worth of work or more in just a few days. Your company will actually benefit more if employees ease back into the swing of things and hang on to the relaxed feeling they achieved over vacation. Keep reading for some tips on how to encourage employees to ease back into work mode.

  1. Manage e-mail. It can be tempting to send messages to employees while they are on vacation so that your request will be at the top of the queue when they return. Not only that, sending the message on allows you to move that action item off of your To Do list. Sounds like a win-win, right? Not really. If everyone sends the vacationer messages your request may actually end up at the bottom of a very long list of messages and it could easily be overlooked.  Besides coming back to work to find that you have hundreds or even thousands of messages waiting for your attention can be very stressful. Even if all those unread messages don't generate anxiety going through and reading each one can still eat up a good chunk of your employee's day which could keep them from accomplishing other critical tasks.
  2. Prioritize. Having tasks waiting when you return to work is job security. Having a bunch of urgent jobs vying for your attention is stress inducing. Consider which tasks are truly critical and which ones can wait a day or two. Only attach urgency to those items that really do need to be completed sooner rather than later.
  3. Schedule meetings sparingly. The rest of your staff may have been anxiously awaiting the return of your vacationing employee because they need his or her input on several ongoing projects. If each one schedules a meeting to go over their concerns that first day back can quickly turn into a packed schedule of meetings. Not only will this hinder productivity it can be a very long and tiring day. Encourage other employees to spread out the meeting requests over that first week if possible. Allowing the returning employee some quiet time to focus can keep them feeling relaxed and reenergized and improve overall productivity.
  4. Organize a lunch out. If the vacationer went someplace exciting a lot of their coworkers are going to want to hear all their trip. Talking about the fun they had on vacation keeps those happy relaxing memories going so it probably won't be hard to get them to expound on the experience. All that chit chat can really slow everyone down. Suggesting a lunch can allow several people to hear the details all at once and gives everyone a chance to enjoy hearing about the vacation without feeling guilty about slacking off at work.
  5. Welcome them back. Coming back from vacation is almost always difficult. No one really looks forward to the end of vacation and a return to the daily grind. Welcoming your employee back can be something as simple as a note or a pastry waiting at their desk when they return but it will make them smile and brighten an otherwise blah day. These little gestures let your employee know that you value their service and you're glad they're back.

Encouraging employees to take vacations can be great for morale and productivity. Easing them back into the workflow will actually increase those benefits. We hope the tips above help you and your employees get more out of every vacation.
