Beat the Heat

simple home inventory solutionWhen temperatures soar our motivation tends to wane. The hotter it is outside, the less we want to do. If it's too hot to truly enjoy being outdoors it can be a great time to work on some inside projects that you've been putting off. Number one on your list should be decluttering and organizing your home. Many times we think that we need to repaint, or replace larger home features when all we really need to do to refresh our space is to declutter. Before you jump in and decide to spend big bucks renovating, follow these simple tips to declutter.

Start small. Don't try to tackle everything at once. You'll feel overwhelmed, plus you'll be left with a big mess if you start working in too many areas and find yourself unable to finish in the time that you have.  Choose one room, or even one area of one room to start with. Not only will this be a more manageable project, it can provide a sense of accomplishment more quickly because it won't take too long to see results. Build from there as you have the time and energy to do more.

Formulate a plan. The best laid plans may sometimes go awry, but at least it gives you an idea of what you're trying to do and how you plan to get it done. Without a plan it's easy to get off track. Suddenly you realize that you've spent a large chunk of time on something you didn't intend, or even really need, to do and now you don't have the time to focus on something that would have provided greater benefit. This can also help you avoid situations where you simply move clutter from one spot to another. It doesn't really serve a purpose if you clear one area only to make a bigger mess in another. In that case, you're just shifting the clutter, you're not really getting rid of it at all.

Be tough. Many of us accumulate clutter because we're reluctant to let things go. Sometimes it's sentimental attachment, other times it's guilt over how much we paid for an item, or how short a time we've owned it. Whatever has you holding on, let go of the things that you don't want, need or use. You'll feel better in the long run and be a lot happier when you drowning in clutter.

Donate. A great way to feel good about getting rid of stuff is to donate it to a worthy cause. Not only will you get a tax break for your donated goods, you'll also get a good feeling knowing that you are helping those less fortunate. Don't focus on how much money you wasted on items that you're now getting rid of, think of how many people will be able to benefit from the things you're donating.
